Maxalt Migraine Relief 5mg Wafers contain rizatriptan, a migraine-specific medicine used for the acute relief of migraine in adults with a stable, well-established pattern of migraine symptoms.

The quick-dissolving wafer is placed on the tongue and can be taken without water. This is a Pharmacist Only Medicine (S3) and pharmacist assessment may be required before supply.

Warnings & Important Information

Always read the label and follow directions for use.
Pharmacist consultation may be required before supply.
Do not use in children or adolescents under 18 years of age.
• Use only if your migraine has been diagnosed by a doctor and you have a stable, well-established pattern of migraine symptoms.
• Do not use for tension headaches, cluster headaches or headaches that are not migraine.
• Seek medical advice if this is your first migraine, your headache is more severe than usual, behaves differently, or your migraine pattern has changed.
• Do not use if you are allergic to rizatriptan benzoate, aspartame, phenylalanine or any listed ingredient.
• Do not use if you have untreated high blood pressure, angina, previous heart attack, stroke, transient ischaemic attack, blood vessel disease or ischaemic bowel disease.
• Do not use if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or have taken them within the last 2 weeks.
• Do not use with ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, methysergide, sumatriptan, eletriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan or other migraine medicines unless advised by a doctor or pharmacist.
• Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take propranolol, antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs, St John’s Wort, or any regular medicines.
• Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you have risk factors for heart or blood vessel disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, family history of heart disease, being male over 40 years, or being female after menopause.
• Not recommended during pregnancy unless advised by a healthcare professional.
• Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
• This medicine may cause dizziness, sleepiness or tiredness. Be careful driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
• Alcohol may worsen dizziness or sleepiness.
• Frequent use of migraine medicines may worsen headaches. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you need migraine relief medicine often.
• Seek urgent medical help if you experience chest pain or tightness, shortness of breath, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, seizure, severe rash, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, slurred speech, or symptoms of stroke.
• If you think you have taken too much, contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or seek medical help immediately.
• Do not use if the packaging is torn, damaged or past the expiry date.

Ingredients

Active ingredient: Rizatriptan benzoate 7.265mg per wafer, equivalent to rizatriptan 5mg.
Other ingredients: Gelatin, mannitol, glycine, aspartame and peppermint flavour.
Contains: Aspartame and phenylalanine.

Storage Instructions

• Store below 30°C.
• Keep each wafer in the blister and outer aluminium sachet until ready to take.
• Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture, heat and sunlight.
• Do not store in the bathroom, near a sink, in the car or on windowsills.
• Keep out of reach of children.
